
The Team
Our research project is led by Anne-Linda Camerini (Università della Svizzera italiana, Switzerland), Kathrin Karsay (University of Vienna, Austria) and Ruth Wendt (Ludwig-Maximilians-University Munich, Germany). The team also comprises a Sophie Mayen (Post-Doc, Switzerland), Dora Weubel (Pre-doc, Switzerland), Alina Danilkow (Pre-doc, Austria), and Hannah Bauer (Pre-doc, Germany). Together, we are dedicated to researching the portrayal of mental health on social media as well as its impact on the perceptions, beliefs, and well-being of young people.

Anne-Linda Camerini is Senior Researcher and Lecturer at the Institute of Public Health and head of the Mediaticino research group at the Università della Svizzera italiana in Lugano, Switzerland. She holds a PhD in health communication. Her research includes studies on the role of digital media in the development and well-being of children and adolescents. Her projects are mainly funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNF) and are carried out in collaboration with schools.

Kathrin Karsay (PhD, 2018) is an Assistant Professor at the Department of Communication at the University of Vienna. Her research focuses on the use and effects of digital media, with an emphasis on adolescents, the challenges of permanent connectivity, and the opportunities and risks of health and illness representation in social media.

Ruth Wendt (PhD, 2014) is a Professor of Communication Science with a focus on Digital Literacy in Algorithmic Spaces at the Department of Media and Communication at Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität Munich. Her research focuses on the use and effects of digital media, particularly among children and adolescents, aspects of digital literacy and questions related to media socialization and media education.

Sophie Mayen is a post-doctoral researcher at the Institute of Public Health at the Università della Svizzera Italiana in Lugano, Switzerland. In her doctoral thesis (“Growing Up Digital”), she modeled the impact of adolescent media use on their development, including mental health and academic performance, at the University of Vienna.

Dora Weubel is a doctoral candidate at the Institute of Public Health at the Università della Svizzera Italiana in Lugano, Switzerland. She studied Applied Media and Communication Science (B.A.) at the TU Ilmenau and Communication in the Digital Societies (M.A.) at the University of Passau. Her research focuses on quantitative methods, digital media use and the social impact of communication technologies.

Alina Danilkow is a PhD researcher at the Department of Mass Media and Communication Science at the University of Vienna. She completed both her bachelor's and master's degree in Mass Media and Communication Science studies at the University of Vienna, while focusing her research specifically on the influence of social media on well-being and identity development of users, using both quantitative and qualitative methods.

Hannah Bauer is a PhD researcher at the Department of Media and Communication at LMU Munich. She previously studied Public Relations (B.A.) at the Stuttgart Media University and Health Communication (M.Sc.) at the University of Erfurt. So far, she has mainly conducted research on health communication issues (e.g. misinformation, vaccination, communication of medical uncertainty) using quantitative methods such as experimental surveys and meta-analyses.

Lena Klampfer is a master's student in Journalism and Communication Studies at the University of Vienna, where she also completed her Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) and worked as a tutor alongside her studies. She is currently employed as a project assistant and accompanying tutor for Ass.-Prof. Dr. Kathrin Karsay. Her research interests focus particularly on media effects research and media psychology.

Andre Anthony Foster is studying his Masters in Communication Science at the Department of Media and Communication at LMU Munich. Janina Hagner is pursuing a Master's degree in Communication Science at the Department of Media and Communication at Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich, where she also completed her Bachelor's degree (B.A.). In parallel, she works as a student assistant in the department of Prof. Dr. Ruth Wendt. Her research interests focus particularly on the fields of media education and media effects research.
